about

In response to the enthusiasm surrounding our 2010 Summer Podcast Series, we've bundled together the newly-recorded material from the podcasts into this digital EP entitled “Live in Monophonorama!”

Included are two CTRR standards arranged for voice and piano trio, a version of “Bicycle” by “kindie-rock” band The Jellydots, the funky “Spider and the Fly” (written by the band’s dear friend and KC jazz legend “Mama” Myra Taylor), the folk classic “Chocolate Ice Cream Cone”, and a quirky original Coal Train jump-blues entitled “Jump@7”.

All aboard!

Track Name: The Spider And The Fly
"Come into my parlor," said the spider to the fly.
"It's the gayest little parlor that you ever did spy.
I promise to behave like a nice spider should
and treat you just as royal as a fly king would."

It's a lie, it's a lowdown, dirty, dirty lie!

"Come into my parlor," said the spider to the fly.
"I don't think I oughta," was my gay reply,
"for I see a little twinkle shining in your eye,
and the day I enter will be the day I die."

It's a lie, it's a lowdown, dirty, dirty lie!

"The whale swallowed Jonah and he put him on the land.
The fool that swallows me - he may not understand
so I think that I'll stay just where I oughta be.
I don't want no foolish spider to make a sandwich outta me!"

It's a lie, it's a lowdown, dirty, dirty lie!

"You got great big eyes to see me,
you got a great big nose to smell me,
you got a great big mouth to eat me
but I ain't ready to die!"

It's a lie, it's a lowdown, dirty, dirty lie!
Track Name: What's Mine Is Yours
What’s mine is yours – what’s yours is mine.
When we share - oh, what a lovely time!
It used to be I felt so blue, but suddenly, I’m telling you
What’s mine is yours, what’s yours is mine.
You’re my friend, so help yourself.
Take anything you want off of my bedroom shelf.
When we’re done, I’m glad to say, I’ll help you put it all away
And we’ll go to your house and start again.
Things seem to go so perfectly
when we play together side by side.
There’s so much more to keep us occupied
When our imaginations combine.
I’ll give you this, you give me that.
Let’s trade, and we can always just switch them back!
I’m glad I’m not the only one, ‘cause sharing is just too much fun -
What’s mine is yours, what’s yours is mine.
Track Name: Jump@7
Hey, wake up, the sun beat us to it!
What on earth are you lying there for?
You’re still dreaming, but I’ve been scheming
About a way to get your feet on the floor.
You’ll end up in a tizzy and be a little dizzy,
It’s going to get busy at the foot of this bed when I

Jump! at seven.
There’s not another second to waste!
Mornings are heaven,
What’s the sunlight for if you’re never awake?
I don’t need coffee to set me off,
My body goes blam! at seven a.m.

Birds are singing, alarm bells ringing,
The dog is scratching at the bedroom door.
With every bit of me blowing reveille,
Why should I sit here watching you snore -
You’ll be reeling when I touch the ceiling,
‘scuse me if I use you as a diving board while I

Jump! at seven.
It’s time to get your boogie shoes on.
My motor is revving,
I don’t care if it’s the crack of dawn.
I don't need coffee to set me off,
My body goes pow! Hey, get up now!

‘scuse me if I use you as a diving board while I
Jump! at seven.
There’s not another second to waste!
Mornings are heaven,
What’s the sunlight for if you’re never awake?
I don’t need coffee to set me off,
My body goes blam! at seven a.m.
Track Name: My Chocolate Ice Cream Cone
My mama said if I'd be good she'd send me to the store.
She said she'd bake some gingerbread if I would sweep the floor,
And so I did the things she said - and then she made some gingerbread.
Then I went out, just me alone, and got my chocolate ice cream cone.

While coming back I stubbed my toe upon a big old stone!
Now need I tell you that I dropped my chocolate ice cream cone?

A little doggie came along and he took a great big lick!
And then I hit that mean old dog with just a little stick!
Then he bit me where I sit down and he chased me all over town - and when he did, I was thinkin' bout...

"Stopping by Pied Piper, where the flavors are uncanny:
Root Beer Float and War & Peach, sorbet made of banany!
Minty Python - is that the one?
There's Oatmeal Raisin in the Sun,
Butterfinger - I can't believe it,
Are you there, God? It's me, Margarita!
Ginger Ale sorbet,
maybe Vanilla Ice, Ice, baby!
Sour Cherry Cheesecake, Chocolate Walnut,
and Smurfberry Crunch, and..."

And now I'm lost - can't find my home
All because of that chocolate, chocolate, chocolate, chocolate
All because of that chocolate ice cream cone!
Track Name: It's Hard to Listen
It’s hard, it’s hard to listen
It’s hard, it’s hard to obey
It’s hard, it’s hard to listen
When I really, really, really
Want to do it my way
You say to hold your hand
But I wanna be a big kid
You say don’t pick up things that break
I wanna do what you did
It’s hard, it’s hard to listen
When I really, really, really
Want to do it my way
It’s hard, it’s hard to listen
It’s hard, it’s hard to obey
It’s hard, it’s hard to listen
When I really, really, really
Want to do it my way
You say it’s time to go
But I say five more minutes
You say that was five minutes ago
You open the door, say it’s time to get in
But it’s hard, it’s hard to listen
When I really, really, really
Want to do it my way
It’s hard to understand you
When there’s all these things in my head
It’s hard to pay attention
I don’t think I heard a single word that you said,
yes it’s hard, it’s hard to listen
It’s hard, it’s hard to obey
It’s hard, it’s hard to listen
When I really, really, really want to do it my way.
Track Name: Bicycle
Riding my bicycle - so smooth…

When I was nine years old, I had my bicycle -
Now that I'm thirty one, I think it's just as fun.
So fun...

Before I got my guitar
Before I had my first car
I had my training wheels
A bicycle made of steel
So real...

It's a beautiful day for a ride!
You know you wanna come along!
It's a beautiful day outside
the air will do you good

Riding my bicycle - so smooth…

I wish that I could be bicycling on the sea
I'd have a paddleboat, my bicycle would float
and float...

I wish that I could fly bicycles in the sky
My legs are getting strong - bicycles all day long
So long...

It's a beautiful day for a ride!
You know you wanna come along!
its a beautiful day outside
the air will do you good

Riding my bicycle - so smooth…
So long!
